Library Discovery - User Guide: Advanced Search

Advanced Search

The Advanced Search page enables you to specify additional lines of criteria, which are not available with the Basic Search. In addition, it enables you to specify filters prior to executing the query. To access the Advanced Search, click Advanced Search to the right of the search bar.

  • The Any Field drop-down menu limits the search tool to search for keywords only in the field specified.
  • The Contains drop-down menu allows you to filter how the keywords are searched.
  • The AND drop-down box assists in constructing a search using the operator words AND, NOT and OR. This allows you to separate your search terms.
  • + Add A NEW LINE allows you to add to your search with more keywords. This can help narrow down or expand the number of search results.
  • Additional filters on the right are Material Type, Language and Dates.

Performing Broad Searches with a Wildcard

You can include the following wildcard characters within search terms to broaden your search results:

? – enter a question mark to perform a single-character wildcard search. For example, type wom?n to search for records that contain the strings woman, women, and so forth.

* – enter an asterisk to perform a multiple-character wildcard search. For example, type analytic* to search for records that contain the strings analytics, analytical, and so forth.

Example: search for items containing the term "data" and the terms starting with "analytic"

In addition, the Advanced Search enables you to perform a search that returns all records for one or more selected pre-filters (such as Material Type and Language). To perform this type of search, enclose the * wildcard in quotes and select at least one pre-filter.

Example: search for all items in the format Video/Film in the Chinese language
